Boxing legend Ricky Hatton discusses his incredible weight loss journey, ring comeback, and rock bottom.

Ricky Hatton was 15st 4lbs, drinking every weekend, overindulging in takeout, and ignoring his health eight months ago.

The former world champion and British boxing star admits: “I was tremendously obese.” He was 43 years old and training professional fighters in his gym in Hyde, Manchester, Monday through Friday.

Then he received a call asking whether he would be interested in competing in an exhibition bout at Manchester’s AO Arena against an old foe who had become a close friend, former three-weight world champion Marco Antonio Barrera, aged 48.

He seized the chance, seeing it as a chance to uplift others’ and his own spirits.

Currently 44 years old, Hatton adds, “It was a fairly easy decision to make.”

“To become in shape and motivate a large number of people was the entire point of setting myself a goal for this exhibition.

“Wow, if you can do it, what you’ve been through and shift all that weight at 44 years of age? That’s what the letters and comments of people who have struggled with weight and mental health have said before I’ve even stepped foot in the ring.

As much as pulling punches, that is what it’s all about for me.
