Biathlete of the Ukrainian national team Anastasia Merkushina commented on the 15th place in the single mixed relay at the 2023 World Championships.
“There were three stages in a row before Europe. We ran almost all the races, ran all three stages. We arrived in Lenzerheide, but there are no stages there – you can fight. But it had to be borne in mind that the Norwegian team was preparing at an altitude even higher than Lenzerheide. They arrived there with maximum preparation, elated. And we are exhausted after the stages. We had to fight them, we wanted to.
I wanted a medal, of course, to work out to the maximum. This moment – perfectionism worked. Instead of preparing here, we worked there. And extra days in the mountains. After the mountains there is reclimatization. Perhaps such a day fell on me during the persecution, I did not calculate it. Somewhere, it may have torn, broken.
We will try to simply not think, to put off until later everything that happens to us. After two days, you can drive into depression. We need to work and believe in the best. High performance sport is not about health. We work directly with the heart. Such jumps up and down, from competition to competition without rest – it’s pretty hard. Such a result, of course, is not predictable, but understandable. No one would have corrected this, because there were such plans, it was calculated that way.
Did the coaches miss something? There are many factors. Here, not only coaches can decide something,” said Merkushina.
