“Super League? There is no place for cartels in Europe.”

Aleksander Čeferin, who was re-elected today as UEFA President, commented on the attempts to create a Super League in European football:

“We are faced with a turbulent globalization and all that it entails: both conveniences and risks too. We must not forget about it. There were temptations and even attempts to create new models (meaning the Superleague – ed.), but they contradict the European model, which we have and appreciate very much.

Our model is based on sport merit. Where we come from, merit has no price. Merit cannot be purchased, it can only be earned, season after season. On and off the field. There is no place for cartels on this continent. I think we’ve all made that very clear together.”
